Historical novels about legendary women and men
I love to write historical novels (as well as reading them!) and my ideas always seem to come from what I would call ‘the footnotes of history’ – tiny mentions, hidden away, of women and men who have somehow slipped away into the shadows of mainstream history as well as those who have inspired legends to spring up around them so that myth and fact become intertwined. I try to always have authentic settings and include key historical events, but then allow myself to play with the legends and how they might have begun. My current novels are set in China’s Forbidden City in the 1700s, but next up I’ll be working on the Almoravid Muslim Empire in Morocco and Spain of the 1100s.
